331 B.C.E- Alexander, the Great of Macedonia, defeated Darius III of Persia at the Battle of Gaugamela and marked the Persian empire’s end.

1553- After her coronation, Mary I was the queen who ruled England independently and was later dubbed “Bloody Mary” because she persecuted Protestants in a vain attempt to restore Roman Catholicism in the country.

1932- In the third game of the World Series, New York Yankee Babe Ruth made his famous “called shot” when he pointed at the bleachers in the center of the field at Wrigley Field and then hit the home run from this spot. The Yankees beat Chicago Cubs and went on to claim the championship.

1936- Francisco Franco became head of the new Nationalist regime of Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

1946- The verdict was passed on 22 of the initial twenty-four defendants of the Nurnberg trials, a series of trials after World War II. The International Military Tribunal indicted and tried ex-Nazi leaders for war crimes.

1957- Thalidomide launched: Thalidomide is an anti-nausea medicine and sleep aid, was introduced. For the next five years, it was frequently used for pregnant women to treat morning sickness. The drug was then removed from the market following the discovery that it could cause congenital disabilities.

1960- Nigeria gained its independence from Britain but remained a member of the Commonwealth.

1961- Formation of Federal Republic of Cameroon: British Cameroon or Southern Cameroon joined the Republic of Cameroon to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon.

1971- The Walt Disney World Resort– a complex located near Orlando, Florida, with attractions based on stories and characters developed by the Disney Company — opened in.

1975- In what is regarded by many as the greatest prizefight of all time (the “Thrilla in Manila”), Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier after the latter’s corner called a halt to the bout after 14 brutal rounds.

1991- Siege of Dubrovnik: The Siege of Dubrovnik began during the Croatian War of Independence. On this day, the Yugoslav People’s Army started its offensive on Dubrovnik.

1994- The Republic of Palau officially became a sovereign state.

2013- American novelist Tom Clancy, who created the techno-thriller—a suspenseful novel that relies on extensive military technology and espionage—died at age 66.

2017- At his home in Las Vegas, 64-year-old gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on an event that killed 58 and injured hundreds before committing suicide, which was more than the Orlando massacre (2016) in the list of the most deadly mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

1864– Cyclone strikes Calcutta: 70,000 killed.

1953- Indian state of Andhra Pradesh partitioned from Madras.

1999– Sourav Ganguly smashes 11 fours and 5 sixes for a blistering 139 as India (277/6) dominates Zimbabwe (170) in the 6th cricket LG Cup ODI in Nairobi.

1542– Mariam-uz-Zamani was a wife of the Mughal emperor Akbar.

1847 – Annie Besant: She is a feminist, right-wing politics and an educationist. Along Lokmanya and Lokmanya, founded the Home Rule League Movement in 1916. She became the first female to be the president of the Indian National Congress in 1917. She also founded Central Hindu College in Banaras (now Varanasi). Annie also established her own Scout Movement in India.

1861- Nilratan Sircar was an eminent Indian doctor, philanthropist and swadeshi entrepreneur.

1862- Raghupathi Venkataratnam Naidu was an Indian social reformer who hailed from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh in India.

1887- Hridya Nath Kunzru was an Indian freedom fighter and public figure.

1904- Ayillyath Kuttiari Gopalan was an Indian communist leader, serving CPI with 16 members out of 489 since the first Lok Sabha in 1952.

1906- Sachin Dev Burman was an Indian music director and singer.

1922- Allu Ramalingaiah was an Indian Telugu comic actor who appeared in over 1000 Tollywood films.

1928– Sivaji Ganesan was an Indian actor, and producer. Google also released a special Doodle on his 93rd birthday.

1945- Ram Nath Kovind, Indian politician serving as the 14th and current President of India.

1969- Mahesh Thakur, Indian actor who has played roles in many films, TV serials and web series.

1979- Shraddha Nigam, Indian film and television actress.

1984- Vineeth Sreenivasan, Indian playback singer, actor, film director, screenwriter, producer.

1990- Anushka Ranjan, Indian film actress and model.

1998- Jehan Daruvala, Indian racing driver competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
